I’m a big supporter of the Etsy community and their retailers. I’ve found them to be so creative and the best at what they do. I’ve used them for so many projects it’s hard to keep track of now, but the most surprising was when I found MovaLight Maternity.
Tiana, the owner and designer, creates the most beautiful maternity dresses. I combed through hundreds of stores offering the same type of thing, but hers was something different. It was special. I’ve always been a fan of custom or bespoke dresses, that’s the only way to ensure that it’ll fit my body. I’m only 4′ 11 (150cm) and curvy so it’s hard to find dresses that would fit, even if they were petite sizes.
In high school my prom dresses were all custom made. I would think of the design, sketch it terribly and buy the fabrics. Luckily I had a friend whose mom was a seamstress and she made it come to life. I was nervous about how my dresses would come out trusting someone online. We only communicated through email and I provided my measurements which my husband helped me measure. So I was not confident that these dresses would turn out the way I wanted, but I was wrong. They exceeded my expectations. I purchased 3 dresses while I was pregnant. One for my baby shower, one for my first year wedding anniversary and a long gown for my maternity photoshoot. I loved them all.
So when it came time to find a dress for my son’s christening it didn’t take me long to ask Tiana to create a non-maternity dress for my postpartum body. My inspiration this time was Kate Middleton’s Alexander McQueen white lace dress she wore to the Royal Ascot in 2017. It was elegant and classy just the way I wanted to look on that day.
I sent Tiana the photos and my measurements and she sent me this sketch and lace choice.
We decided to move forward with it and again I was blown away by the result! It was so beautiful and more importantly comfortable! I felt so beautiful on the day of my son’s christening that I think it showed in the pictures.
For all the new moms, you know how challenging it could be to feel pretty or good about your postpartum body. I usually live in sweatpants, nursing tops and covered in spit so this dress made me feel glamorous!
